Frequently Asked Questions

Here you will find answers to any questions you might have regarding LEED, PTL Exam Prep, or any other section of our site.

LEED

  • Q: What is LEED?
A: LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. LEED is a third party certification program and a widely accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council in 2001 through a consensus-based process, LEED serves as a tool for buildings of all types and sizes. LEED certification offers third-party validation of a project’s green features and verifies that the building is operating exactly the way it was designed to.

  • Q: What are the benefits of LEED certification?
A: LEED certification is third-party validation of a building’s performance. LEED certified projects blend environmental, economic, and occupant-oriented performance. They cost less to operate and maintain; are energy- and water-efficient; have higher leaseup rates than conventional buildings in their markets; are healthier and safer for occupants; and are a physical demonstration of the values of the organizations that own and occupy them.

  • Q: How does LEED work?
A: LEED is a point-based system where projects earn points for satisfying specific green building criteria. Within each of the six LEED credit categories, projects must satisfy particular prerequisites and earn points. The six categories include Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy & Atmosphere, Materials & Resources, Indoor Environmental Quality and Innovation in Design (projects can earn ID points for green building innovations). The number of points the project earns determines the level of LEED Certification the project receives. LEED certification is available in four progressive levels: Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum.

  • Q: Is there a difference between the U.S. and Canadian LEED exams?
  • A: Yes there is. Both systems have a different credit and rating system. Please refer to the CGBC versus the USGBC systems to view the differences.

  • Q: How do I sign up to take the LEED exam?
A: Easy. Simply goto the www.gbci.org website. Click on exam registration. Create an account and fill-out the information. Select your date and place to take the exam. Under the new (Version 3 2009) exam, you will also require proof of eligibility.

  • Q: What will obtaining the LEED accreditation mean for me?
A: LEED Accredited Professionals will have opportunities to look and apply for LEED jobs. It is estimated that millions of new LEED jobs will be created within the next few years. A LEED AP can also Certify LEED Projects and be a valuable member on a LEED Certification Team.
